That smile look familiar? Long before The Joker's grim grimace gave us nightmares (and Batman a reason to don his cape at night), The Man Who Laughs gave us Gwynplaine, the misfortunate young son of an English nobleman who offends the vindictive King James II. The cruel king exacts his revenge by placing the nobleman in an iron maiden -- and commissions his royal surgeon to disfigure the boy's face into a permanent grin (as a title card in the film reads) "to laugh forever at his fool of a father." Based on a Victor Hugo novel, this haunting, swashbuckling film is a great way to kick off Halloween. Presented at The Alden in McLean, the film will be screened in 16mm film with an introduction by film historian Bruce Lawton and a live improvised score by composer Ben Model.
